The château was built in 1758 by Monsieur de Pontet, and with after the French Revolution, Hugh Barton, an Irish wine merchant, fulfilled his dream of becoming a landowner by buying vineyards in the Médoc.

The 123 acres of Château Léoville Barton, planted in gravel soil on a clay subsoil, include a high proportion of old vines to obtain the best possible quality.
