The story
Quinta do Zambujeiro is located approximately 170km east of Lisbon in the south eastern Portuguese region of Alentejo. Emil Strickler an enthusiastic Swiss wine lover bought the vineyard in 1998.
Viticulture
On Quinta do Zambujeiro, they use a conventional and biological farming practices. They do not use any herbicides and protect the soils with natural cover crops over the wet winter season. They strongly believe that only vineyards with low yields can produce wines with high concentration in flavor and taste, made for a long life in the bottle. They reduce all their vineyards in yield. The average harvest is 23 hl per hectare.
The main grapes are Trincadeira, Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Tinta Caiada for the reds and, Arinto and Antão Vaz for the whites.
Winemaking
All grapes are handpicked and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and in small fermenting tanks of French oak. Depending on the wine style, they use selected or spontaneous yeast strains. Pump overs and pigeage are used to submerge the skins. Long macerations on skins up to 6 weeks extract tannins and color. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels. All red wines are barrel matured in French oak for up to two years and bottled without any filtration or fining. The wines are made for a long life in the bottle and will age slowly to perfection over many years.
